How does Bruce Fordyce, the decorated ultra-marathon winner prepare, for his 29th attempt at the race that defined his running career? He maintains the strict training regime that supported him through the years; he follows the diet that keeps his energy level high enough for the 86 kilometres; and (in 2011) he arrives at the Zenzeleni Community Centre in Mpophomeni to hand out the prizes for a 5 kilometer fun run.
The second Lula Isandla fun run was held on the 28th of May at the Zenzeleni Community Centre. The 5km route winds through the suburb of Mpophomeni and 250 children, colourfully attired in their red, blue, orange and yellow race t-shirts set off with enthusiastic pace at roughly 10 am.
Marshalled by the Vukuza Mama’s, who provide the children with weekday lunches at the community centre, the runners were also sandwiched by police cars. The law enforcers there to manage the flow of traffic throughout the race.
18 minutes after the start our victor raced across the finish line. A pretty impressive time, irrespective of circumstance. As Bruce mentioned, if he completes 5 kms in 18 minutes he is shattered.
After the run, the children received a decent lunch of hotdogs and juice.Slightly different from their daily intake of a well rounded meal of meat vege's and fruit, but it was a treat.
What a day, what fun, how colourful, and next year we'll do it all again; and you are all invited to join us!
There are many people to thank;
Neem Consulting (Ronald Tweedie) for funding the t-shirts;
Marcelle Arnold for arranging the t-shirts at cost;
Merrivale Spar for the hot-dogs;
Honeydew Juice for the juice supply
Newly elected Councillor Scelo Majozi of Mpophomeni ward 10 for handing out the prizes with Bruce;
CPF chairpeson Sizwe Nkomo for starting the race;
Captain Makhathini of the Mpophomeni police station for helping us keep everyone safe; and
the Fordyces for their commitment to making it to our event on such a busy weekend.
Kind regards, Claire
